Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was a bit worried about the price tag...but The headphones went on sale and I go them because - I miss listening to music on LPs. The sound was so rich and the headphones made it better; back in the day. Now with all the compression, we miss the good in music. I wanted to get a pair of nice headphones, paired them with a FIIO Amp/DAC and OMG. I am back! I am loving music again. These headphones are amazing. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great build, quality materials, fantastic fit The sound out of this set is so balanced and enjoyable I wish that I could take them everywhere. I have nothing to say bad about the things that make this a headset. The pros are in the title. Cons - Extremely long cable that is not detachable Ear cups could be a smidge deeper (this is because I have large stick out ears) That's all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sonic Heaven Well like others I searched for headphones that are reasonably priced, sound great, and are comfortable. Taken advantage of Haman sales, I purchased the AKG wireless 50 BT for my office and daily commuting and could get over the sound quality for a wireless headphone. When the K550 went on sale, I immediately researched the reviews and found out quickly how good these were. Plop down my money and after careful break in, I put on some hi res music. What!!?? Wow!!! On a very old recording that I have listen to for over 40 plus years I could hear the buzz of the amplifiers! The details inside the music was breath taking. With a little sum of money my vast music collection was re-born. Bass heads look elsewhere. But, if you have properly heard music presented in HIGH fidelity than these are for you. These totally immerse me in the music regardless of the source.Faannnntttaaaassssttttiiiiccc!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from phenomenal headphones Owned these three times now, I cannot find a better closed set of cans! Very comfortable, awesome bass (when worn correctly), amazing levels of detail retrieval and great pacing. I picked these up for £129, total bargain! I use these at home and on the move, not many can do a good job of both. Recommendation given.

I was advised the K550 MKIII is light on the bottom end, meaning not much bass, can anyone confirm this? I don't want to order online only to find they have a tinny sound, also can I get a shorter cable? 3M is far too long as I use on my laptop in work.

Asked by: DonaldsonAC
Hi, and thank you for your interest in AKG! First of all, please remember that sound perception is very individual and very personal. Some like thunderous bass, others prefer precision. I would definitely not describe the K550 series as tinny, or even light in the bass. However, like the venerable K701, they are very precise in the bottom end, they go very deep, but they have no extra body or bloom, so if you like a very full and boomy bass, these are not for you. If you are familiar with the K701, you will know this sound. Also, it is important to have a good headphone amplifier to drive them, although they are not nearly as critical as K701 in this regard. But they are very transparent and airy. You can see a good review from What Hifi here: https://www.whathifi.com/akg/k550/review. They get the sound pretty precisely. As an aside, I can mention that the K545 is actually a K550 with a smaller exterior and fuller audio balance. They are not available from us any more, but could be interesting if you fancy more upper bass level. We do not have alternative cable lengths, sorry, and I have not seen this kind of cable for sale. However, I would think that some of the companies that specialize in custom headphone cabling (balanced cables etc.) may be able to help. I hope this helps.

Hi, I understand from a above that you have used protein leather in this product and not real leather. But as a vegan can I check whether your protein leather uses the protein from egg shells in its production?

Asked by: Paul Munson
Hi Paul, No, the protein leather is artificial, no protein from egg shells or other animal products has been used in the manufacturing process.

I have the K551 with inline controls. Purchase a QED 2m headphone cable to sit on the couch and watch late night tv. But when I plugged it in, the sound from my K551 was very different, uneven, downright sonically disturbed. What gives?

Asked by: polskasweetie
Hi. Your K551 has remote control on the cable. This means that it has a 4-pole plug, where the extra pole is used for the remote commands. Any normal extension cable will usually be made for hifi use, which is always standard 3-pole. A 4-pole plug in a 3-pole socket will short-circuit two of the poles. You will need an adapter from 4-pole to 3-pole to use your K551 like you want to, and the sound will be like you are used to hearing it.

What are the differences between this and the original K550? Is there a compelling reason to upgrade to this from the original K550? Also, what kind of cable do I need to buy to be able to use this with my tv (for late night watching)?

Asked by: polskasweetie
Hi. There are no differences that would justify preferring the mkII. Since the K550 has no remote control on the cable, it should work with any normal 3-pole stereo headphone output, in a TV or a stereo system. But of course your TV could be different. Also, you have both 3.5mm and 6.3mm plugs as standard equipment.

Could you please tell me what material the ear pads on the K550 MK2 is? Thank you

Asked by: Garry
Yes, of course. They are made of protein leather, also known under its popular name Pleather. This material is bonded to a fabric base material.
